Better breathing for the Thoroughbred Racehorse

EVENT DATE  |  16-06-2021

ARVS
ARVS is pleased to announce that our Summer Scientific Meeting, “Better Breathing for the Thoroughbred Racehorse” will take place on June 16th, 2021.  The meeting will take place “virtually” due to the continued restrictions for in person meetings.  We are lucky that all of our scheduled speakers for the meeting in 2020 are able to join us for this rescheduled meeting in 2021.

The morning session will be devoted to laryngeal function based on overground endoscopy with presentation of novel information regarding the merits and methods of training the respiratory muscles to improve function.  The presenters, Lisa Katz, Kate Allen and Laura Fitzharris have been undertaking this original research.   Following this, Safia Barakzai will discuss horses that continue to make noise following various “wind ops” and what the possible causes and remedies might be.  Henry Tremaine will complete the talks related to the upper airway, by providing insight into evaluation and treatment of head trauma at the racecourse.

The afternoon session will be dominated by discussion of diseases of the lower airway.   Celia Marr will provide an overview of exercise induced pulmonary haemorrhage along with the newest information regarding evaluation and treatment.  This will be followed by presentation of a Horserace Betting Levy Board sponsored study regarding Exercise Associated Fatal Pulmonary Haemorrhage, a less well recognised form of EIPH. The lower airway session will be completed by Shaun McKane, reviewing of lower airway disease and the results of sequential BAL and tracheal washes in racehorses in training.  The day will be finished with some case discussions and a question and answer session.

We hope that you will be able to “join” us for this virtual meeting.   Hopefully, one of the last ones to occur in this format, before gathering together in person is allowed.
