Crack The Code on Equine Welfare – 9th Annual Equine Industry Symposium

The University of Guelph’s Equine Management students are proud to host the 9th Annual Equine Industry Symposium, a two-night virtual event made possible through Ontario Equestrian’s Zoom platform, taking place on November 19th and 20th, 2024. This year’s focus is on advancing equine welfare through the exploration of the National Farm Animal Care Council’s (NFACC) Equine Code of Practice, currently undergoing its 10-year revision. The theme, “Cracking the Code,” will delve into the Code’s critical role in shaping the care and well-being of horses both locally and globally. Join us for two FREE nights of education, collaboration and engaging discussions aimed at making a positive impact on equid care.

Event Details:

The first night, Cracking the Code – What’s in it for me and my horse?

(November 19, 2024. 6:00 PM – 7:30 PM), will explore the Equine Code of Practice, its development, and its methods for establishing welfare standards. Attendees will learn how the requirements and the recommendations in the Equine Code of Practice can enhance the health and wellbeing of horses. Participants will also learn how they can actively participate in shaping the content of the revised code.

The second night, Global Awareness of Equine Care and Welfare – For Me and My ‘Neigh’bour (November 20, 2024. 6:00 PM – 7:30 PM), will focus on global equine care, with international experts sharing insights on the implementation of equine welfare practices in their jurisdictions. Attendees can participate in an open Q&A, fostering a collaborative exchange of ideas and solutions.

About the BBRM EQM program:

The Bachelor of Bio-Resource Management program with a major in Equine Management at the University of Guelph is Canada’s first and only program of its kind. It combines equine science and business management into one program. Also offered in a co-op format, students engage in experiential, hands-on learning that equips them for diverse careers, including veterinary medicine.
