The group was founded in 1985 and has played a major role in promoting the welfare and integrity of horse racing; advises authorities worldwide.
The IGSRV in association with the Association of Official Racing Chemists (AORC) organises a biennial International Conference of Racing Analysts and Veterinarians.

The Aims of the IGSRV are:
Act as an official association of veterinarians with an interest in horse racing regulatory matters.
To organize meetings of the International Conference of Racing Analysts and Veterinarians (ICRAV)
To promote veterinary science in the rules of racing of the respective regulatory authorities of member countries.
To promote research, knowledge on health and welfare, diseases, pharmacology and drug metabolism of race horses.
